The General Ledger (GL), in a bank, is a consolidated position of both customer accounts and internal accounts, grouped according to the bank’s requirements. Transactions made everyday, through various accounts, are consolidated to arrive at this position.
Sometimes transactions, like interest, commission, expenditure, income, asset and liability accounts, are made directly at the GL head level.
Some banks, however, maintain a subordinate level to the GL head. This is termed as the GL sub head. In the event of the bank maintaining GL sub heads, consolidation is done at the GL sub head level.
Every transaction has a debit phase and a credit phase. Both these are consolidated to arrive at the consolidated position.

A cash transaction to credit a savings bank account creates the following transactions:
Debit - Cash Account
Credit - Savings Bank (SB) Account of the customer
All transactions are consolidated and the consolidated position is reflected at the EOD in the GL head or GL sub head.
